| My name is James de Blas.I am an artist with twenty-year experience, currently living and working in Kapunda, South Australia. Internationally, I have exhibited in New York, and Barcelona. I was invited to take part in the Florence Biennale last year, but unfortunately was unable to attend. I shall exhibit with other Australian artists who took part in the Biennale in Melbourne in coming months. In Sydney I have exhibited at the Ivan Dougherty Gallery in Paddington and the Legge Gallery in Redfern as well as the Campbell town Regional Gallery and the Penrith Regional Gallery.
My work focuses on still life and mythical stories, which I write myself, as can be seen in The Golden Grasshopper or The Blue Hairy Boy series. I am currently working on the story of Humopia, which is a tale about the journey of the madman on a planetary scale. While my work explores darker territory at times it is leavened with humor and is underpinned by a belief in the power of healing. It is also informed by my personal experience of schizophrenia. I developed the illness in my late teens but have since learned to manage it effectively and have not had a relapse or hospital admission for 16 years |
