Profile
| I am a geneticist by training and a mosaicist by nature. I translate my passion for natural patterns by arranging pieces of glass according to a visual vocabulary that has been shaped by my study of biology -- rather than according to the ways and means of traditional or even contemporary mosaicists. Like the Impressionists, I compose my works with a play of light and shadows, leaving room for improvisation, uncertainty and atmosphere. I glorify the noonday sun with heightened colors that represent the freshness of botanicals in the open air. My hope is to capture your imagination – and sing to your heart. |

- FORGET-ME-NOT FOR LOVE ALONE
- Description: 2011. 28Hx22Wx1D inches. 15 lbs. Stained glass mosaic wall hanging. This work is a third in a series about life forms in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument of SW Oregon. Inspiration was provided by a Myosotis sylvatica (forget-me-not) plant growing along the Pacific Crest Trail. Only one inflorescence (a stem with flowers) is represented here; it is magnified 15x and viewed from a steep vertical). This unassuming plant offers (us) no fragrance, no flavor, no drug, no nutrient, and no fiber. Its unpretentious, minute flowers offer only tint of pale blue (greatly exaggerated here).
- OLD GROWTH
- Description: 2010. 16H x 20W 1D inches. Stained glass and native sand mosaic wall hanging. Rendered is a portion of a large cedar tree trunk, adorned with lichens and moss, where it meets the forest floor. A lichen-covered fallen branch reflects the curve of the trunk. Otherwise, asymmetry reins. OG received Honorable Mention in Contemporary Mosaic Art 2010, juried (by Jean Ann Dabb) international exhibition held at Pam Goode's Ciel Gallery in October, 2010. It was exhibited in Elements, an international, juried exhibition in late Dec - early Jan, 2011. Most recently, it was shown in the Mosaic Art International exhibit in Austin, TX.
- OH, CALIFORNIA!
- Description: 2010. Stained glass mosaic. Wall hanging. 21Hx26Wx1D inches. 14 lbs. Impressionist landscape inspired by Drakesbad, Lassen National Park.
- ASTIR
- Description: Stained glass wall hanging 2010 16H x 20W 1D inches (51 x 41 x 2.5 cm) Layered (1-3) glass on glass. Inspiration came from Drakesbad horse-camp and lodge in Lassen National Park, which is in N. California. Before I tackled the sky, I carelessly kicked the mosaic (I glue after assembling most pieces, so it is "fluid" until then). After rearranging tess in all but the center field, I saw Turmoil. Serendipity demanded that I fracture the sky and add clouds of oil (some pieces are iridescent, which resembles petroleum on water, as in the Gulf of Mexico).
- RADIANCE
- Description: 16Hx20Wx1D inches Stained glass wall hanging RADIANCE is the first in a series of works based on natural, visible patterns in relatively pristine states. Inspiration came from a floral display in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, which was established to protect the incredible diversity of life forms in this small intersection of 3 bioregions at the OR - CA border. On center stage is a ridge-top cluster of mule’s ear* on a midsummer noon. RADIANCE was named for the radial pattern of the petals within each flower and the circular grouping of flowers in the clump, the play of light, and the sunflower, icon of the sun. It has been my honor to have it exhibited in the Smith Museum of Stained Glass on the Navy Pier, Chicago, IL, March - July, 2010. It received Best in Show at the Mosaic Arts International 2010. It was then exhibited at the Grand Rapids Public Museum from September-Oct., 2010. Finally, it is exhibited at the Art-Science Consilience exhibition at the Pence Gallery at the University of California, Davis, from January 14 to February 27, 2011. It has been on the home page of SAMA and its advertisement in Mosaic Art Now EIP 2010. Thanks to Rhonda Heisler, it made the covers of Profitable Glass Quarterly, Winter 2010 and Groutline, Winter 2010. *Arnica, a medicinal herb used to reduce inflammation in strains and sprains
