| Writing in the Naragansset Times, art critic Erica Collins describes
LD Mainzer as a "purist". Chastizing the current digital revolution as "monkey art" he seeks to preserve the artistry and science of film photography. Mainzer's work is laden with profundity- classical philosophy, quantum physics and eastern mysticism are themes to which his work frequently alludes. Inspired by the Dadaists and Surrealism, Mainzer endeavors to produce "thinking man" images. He posits that art without intellect is pure sentimentalism and emotional indulgement- if not mere kitsch. An LD Mainzer print is not something you hang over your sofa; it is something you THINK about, muse over and discuss. As controversial as he is thought-provoking, Mainzer is the new "enfant terrible" of modern art- in the same tradition as Warhol,Kienholz, et.al. "How loathesome this dumbing down of America...", he laments. Ann Blossom McManus ( artist's rep) |
