The proposals are sent from all over the country and occasionally from around the world. As I began clearing my desk by opening the numerous sealed envelopes containing samples of artist's work, I came upon a postmark from Colombia. I was intrigued. The proposal was from Lucia Gomez. As I read the Artist Statement, I found some wonderful passages with which I could identify. Again, I was intrigued. Edited from her statement... "My paintings express metaphysical symbolism and shamanic themes..." "Forms flow... giving way to... labyrinths full of mystery and color that emerge from a state of mental relaxation." There seem to be some wonderful ideas here. You can find Gomez's statement in its entirety on her website at: luciagomez.com. • The Art of Lucia Gomez- by Alvaro Medina Lucia is a serious artist who is committed to working in a medium that many people in the art world consider passé. Fortunately many artists like her continue to explore painting, looking for new nuggets of surprising possibilities – which can vibrate the senses and deeply touch the heart. Lucia Gomez manages a kind of spirituality, but that which has nothing in common with the types of organized religion that is routinely practiced in the western world. This places her in the tradition of Malevich and Mondrian, two founders of the abstract easel painting movement, and for whom non-figurative art only made sense when it spoke about the non material worlds. The work of this Colombian artist is supported by her own quests and enquires. She devotes her work to portrayals of her own life experiences. It is rare in today’s world to find artists who are consistent within themselves, and express what they really feel or think. The substance and the subject of each of her works have a firm theoretical basis and reveal her concerns about the world in which we live. In presenting to viewers fragments about a nonmaterial reality, a reality that we do not want to face, or are too lazy to confront, she presents positions of concern and causes of worry – but also many possibilities of reflection. • Lucia Gomez- El Tiempo (Zona) Newspaper 2009. Devoted to artistic expression, Lucia Gomez transports viewers into deep reflections. The youngest daughter of Master Ricardo Gómez Campuzano, one of the icons of Colombian art during the 20th Century, Lucia is on her own artistic path, away from the Impressionist school in which her father was consecrated. She paints on a path to find her own expression. • Álvaro Medina- About Lucia Gomez (Introduction) 2008. • Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) GmbH • Book, Published by –“ Fortal-Es-Der “-Colombia.2008 • Artists Catalogue 2009 “Intenciones” Intregráficas SA,2008 • The Cove Magazine, August 2008 • “Arte con influencia española” Revista Metronoticias, 2004. • Corporación San Vicente de Paul, Calendar, 2003. • Revista Anales de Ingeniería,”Vol. 116, Sociedad Colombiana de Ingenieros, 2003. • Teresa Martínez De Medina, “La obra de Lucía Gómez,” G.A.F. - The Magic of the Forms Series "Untitled No 52"
- Description: The Magic of the Forms by Lucia Gomez Spirals and many other geometric shapes found in the ocean are filled with strong energy forces that can direct us to connect to our core. When carefully observed, we discover how each shape reaches its own boundaries following a specific path, retracting to its origins, and perpetually renewing its structure. Just as this cycle occurs in life/death/life processes, the spirals and archetypal forms found in sea- shells can lead us to renewal experiences and travel toward new inner horizons by using our intuition. The symbols do not provide definitions or names; they act as intermediaries between the known and the unknown. Seashells have a magical connotation. Their shapes evoke memories lost in time which cannot clearly be defined – but conjure images of distant places, and sounds, tastes, and fragrances, which seem to have an essence, a communicating power, that brings pleasurable sensations of beauty, harmony and feelings of well being. Consciously it is not easy to detect the origin of these emotions and sensations that transcend understanding, but we may speak of the “hidden magic” contained in the forms and memories of childhood or perhaps of other dimensions that we ignore. My paintings express my feelings and insights using forms from the sea as symbols and metaphors. I communicate the forms’ lightness and ethereal essence, opening many possibilities of perception about the magic of their structures, the power of their symbolism, and archetypal influence. I invite viewers to travel through this magical net of shapes and, using their intuition, discover their own feelings and perceptions. 2010
