I've been drawing and painting since i was 5, with my first drawings being faces from photographs of family and teen heart throbs. Throughout school I took every art class available and filled every spare moment with a smorgasbord of 1070's craft kits. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provided a Bachelor of Fine Arts and exploration in painting, print making, costume design, and ceramics. The influence of the different sensibilities has greatly affected how i approach creating my artwork. The common exploration in every medium was the interpretation of dramatic female faces . I found nothing more intriguing or challenging than capturing the story and the emotional expression held in the face. Over the course of the last 16 years working as a decorative artist, I've experimented with various mediums, wall finishes and techniques; and improved my skills under the tutelage of masters in Trompe L'oeil, ornamentation, faux marble, landscapes, grotesque, and figure painting~ enhancing my abilities to return to fine art painting and to the face. This enduring passion has brought me to the designs that I am currently creating~ essence portraits. Interpretive portraits revealing more of their spirit than simply a likeness of their being. The translucent quality of the glazes allows for layering of color that creates unique depth and luminescence while other decorative mediums are implemented for interesting foundations and background texture. I believe it is a harmonious expression of my decorative and fine art experience.
